Which class is the right fit/skill level for me?
Beginner 8-Week Wheel Throwing Class
Perfect For:
This class is ideal for those who have never worked in ceramics before or for those who may have taken a pottery class in high school (or many years ago) and would like a refresh. This is also a perfect transition into ceramics if you just took one of our Try-It Classes! If you’re eager to learn the basics of wheel throwing and want to build a solid foundation, this class is perfect for you!
What You'll Learn:
In this 8-week class, you’ll dive into the basics of wheel throwing, covering all the essential steps involved in creating pottery. You’ll learn the following:
Introduction to the Wheel: Learn how to center, pull up walls, and shape clay into functional forms like cylinders, mugs, and bowls. We will also go over trimming.
Building Basic Forms: Focus on making simple yet beautiful pottery pieces that you can use in your daily life. Building the foundational skills is key to consistent, quality work and advancing to more complex forms.
Glazing Basics: This class will immerse you in the world of glazing, including a detailed exploration of underglazes. You’ll have access to over 200 unique glaze combinations from our extensive glazing wall, featuring 10 distinct bucket glazes, offering endless possibilities to perfect your creations. Our expert instructor will guide you through achieving specific results with different glazes, sharing valuable glaze knowledge and tips to help you achieve the exact finish you’re aiming for.
Duration:
8 weeks, 3 hours per session.
BONUS: 2 open studio sessions (3 hour time slots) to use on the weekends Open Studio Hours. Use this time to work on a project, glaze, practice throwing, or get caught up if you missed class that week! This is independent work time
Open Studio: Students will have access to weekend open studio hours, providing dedicated time outside of class to refine their skills, complete projects, glaze, and work independently. It's the perfect opportunity to continue your practice and make the most of your creative journey.
Level:
This class is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to refresh their basic pottery skills. No prior experience is necessary!
Materials Included:
Basic tools + bisque/glaze firings are included

What to Bring:
Just bring your creativity and enthusiasm! Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy. We do provide aprons and a locker to put your things during class.

Intermediate 8-Week Wheel Throwing Class
Perfect For:
This class is ideal for students who have completed a beginner-level pottery course at our studio, a different studio, or have prior experience with basic wheel throwing and glazing. You don’t need to be a pro, but familiarity with centering, pulling walls, creating basic forms, and glazing is required. If you are unsure feel free to send us an email!
What You'll Learn:
Build upon your foundational skills by exploring:
Refining techniques for centering, shaping, and throwing.
Creating more complex forms vases, taller vessels, altered forms.
Advanced glazing techniques, including underglazes and layering.
Bringing your own project ideas to life with guidance from our instructor.

Beginner/Intermediate 8-Week Wheel Throwing Class
Perfect For:
This class is a great fit for those who have taken a beginner class and are ready to continue developing their skills or for newer students who want to dive in and learn the basics alongside returning students. It’s also ideal for students who aren’t quite ready to fully transition into intermediate-level work and want to slowly dip into more advanced techniques and projects with guided support.
This mixed-level format allows beginners to build a strong foundation while more experienced students challenge themselves at their own pace. Please note: demos and instruction will rotate between beginner and intermediate levels throughout the class. If you’re not sure if this is the right fit for you, feel free to email us!
What You’ll Learn:
Beginners can expect to cover:
Clay prep and studio basics
Centering, pulling, shaping simple forms (cups, bowls, cylinders)
Trimming and finishing techniques
Intro to glazing: dipping, pouring, and brushing
Intermediate students will explore:

Making larger and more complex forms (mugs, vases, lidded pieces)
Decorative surface techniques
Layering glazes and using underglaze

BONUS: 2 open studio sessions (3-hour time slots) to use during weekend Open Studio Hours. Use this time to throw, glaze, catch up on a missed class, or just spend more time creating! This is independent, self-directed time.
Open Studio:
All students will have access to weekend open studio hours to continue their work outside of class. It's a great way to get extra practice, explore ideas, and fully immerse yourself in the pottery process.

All tools and firing fees are included. Clay is available for purchase on the first day of class.

Intermediate/Advanced Hand-building + Wheelthrowing 8-Week Class
Perfect For:
This class is designed for experienced potters who are confident in either handbuilding or wheel throwing and comfortable glazing independently. Ideal for those ready to tackle personal projects, expand their skills, and explore advanced techniques. Each week, you’ll have dedicated one-on-one time with our expert instructor to refine your ideas, execute your projects, and receive guidance throughout the process, all while engaging in discussions about the broader ceramic art world.
What You'll Learn:
Personalized Projects: Bring your creative ideas to life with one-on-one guidance from our expert instructor. From planning and troubleshooting to execution and refinement, you’ll receive support to elevate your work.
Skill-Building: Learn advanced techniques for both hand building and wheel throwing to expand your creative range. Each week we will briefly cover new skills/techniques.
Advanced Glazing: Explore specialized finishing techniques like lusters, underglaze and overglaze decals, oxides, washes, and more to create professional-quality pieces.
Artistic Development: Dive into discussions about opportunities in the ceramic art world, including local shows, selling your work, advertising, and photographing pieces. While participation in these topics is optional, this class is a great resource for artists looking to explore professional growth.
What We Will Cover:
Throwing off the hump
Teapots (optional)
Spouts, bottle necks, and pulled handles
Larger and altered forms
Creating Sets (optional) - throwing similar size and shape using techniques using calipers and rulers
Surface decoration techniques (sgraffito, monoprinting, decals, etc.)
We'll go beyond technique, diving into aesthetics, form relationships, and glaze strategies. This is a great class if you’re full of ideas but want guidance on execution, refinement, and creative direction. Please feel free to ask about how to price and sell work, marketing your work, photographing work, applying to shows (whether its a gallery or arts festival), etc.

Materials:
Tools and firing fees are included; students are encouraged to bring their own tools and supplies. Glazes are included. Clay is not included- must be purchases through the studio unless special permission is given in writing to bring material from outside the studio.
Open Studio: Students will have access to weekend open studio hours, providing dedicated time outside of class to refine their skills, complete projects, glaze, and work independently. It's the perfect opportunity to continue your practice and make the most of your creative journey.

*** All of our 8-week classes offer the option to reserve your spot with a 50% deposit, which covers the first 4 weeks. If you choose this payment plan, the remaining balance will be due by the start of the 4th week of class. The remaining amount will be automatically debited from the card on file in your studio account.
We want everyone to have the opportunity to take a class at BabyFace Studio, so we’re offering flexible payment options! Instead of paying for the entire class upfront, you can now break your payments into 2. This way, you can pay a deposit to reserve your spot and then pay the remaining balance over time. We believe this makes it easier for everyone to join in on the creative fun!
